Volunteer: Operations Manager

About Us:

Hope Against Suicide is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing crucial listening, signposting, and advocacy support to anyone struggling with mental health issues. Our mission is to be a lifeline for those at risk of taking devastating actions. Our three core aims are to get the community talking, improve mental health, and prevent suicide. We strive to create a healthier, more compassionate community where hope can be found, and where deaths by suicide, a leading cause of death worldwide, can be reduced.

Role Overview

Are you a natural organiser who wants to make a real difference?

We’re looking for someone really special here to join our leadership team: someone with specialist knowledge in operations, leadership experience, and strong people skills, who can support and lead our mental health response operations in the Bristol City Centre.

This is a volunteer position with real impact: you’ll be part of a small, agile team delivering frontline mental health support in public spaces, from gentle listening to fast, compassionate intervention in moments of crisis.

You will volunteer on the front lines but most importantly, supporting the amazing volunteers behind the scenes too.

You will oversee shift planning, and supporting team communication, enhancing our operational smoothness, seeking opportunities and actively problem solving.

You’ll play a vital role making sure our shifts and volunteer team can function smoothly, working closely with the management team.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Operational or logistics experience (professional or voluntary)
  • Strong people skills and clear communication
  • A calm, problem-solving approach under pressure
  • A deep commitment to mental health support and suicide prevention

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing and improving shift planning & deployment
  • Ensuring operational safety, legality, and safeguarding compliance and the highest standard of care and safety.
  • Supporting and coordinating volunteer teams on the ground
  • Identifying and addressing gaps, risks or needs in our delivery
  • Working closely with the charity’s leadership team to evolve and adapt our operations as we grow

Additional Information

We estimate around 4-6 voluntary hours a week are needed. Some of these hours will involve optional frontline shifts to help you stay grounded in the work.

You’ll be supported by a passionate and friendly team, and your work will directly help prevent suicide and provide frontline support to people who need a friendly face and a light conversation, to people in crisis requiring a quick acting compassionate response.

You can be part of a critical stage of development, shaping how a grassroots response charity operates in real time to save lives and hold hope for people in their darkest moments.
